General:
Perennial herb from a taproot or branching, underground stem-base; stems somewhat woody at the base, hairless to hairy or glandular (especially in the inflorescence), 10-40 cm tall.
Leaves:
Opposite, linear, 1.5-8 cm long, 1-2.5 mm wide, internodes well-developed.
Flowers:
Inflorescences loose, leafy-bracted, terminal clusters of slender-stalked, sweet-smelling flowers; corollas pink to white, the tube 10-18 mm long, spreading to five wide lobes 7-15 mm long; calyces not glandular, the transparent segments between the green ribs bulging-keeled toward the base; styles 6-15 mm long.
Fruits:
Capsules, 3-chambered, few-seeded.
